FOX NEWS VIDEOS

Video #1

Analysis:
This video discusses the issue of driving while under the influence of marijuana. They make the claim that it's just as bad as driving under the influence of alcohol, likewise in the third paragraph of this source it validates that marijuana use is in fact just as bad as driving drunk. The news anchors also discuss ways of testing levels of marijuana in the bloodstream. They pontificated that the only way to test marijuana in the bloodstream is by blood-testing, which requires a warrant. In the third paragraph of this source, it states that, that is accurate.
They also discuss the Colorado bill and they state that there wasn't anything that makes driving under the influence illegal, but there is. We looked up the Colorado bill and  in section 16, 1-III it states that driving under the influence is indeed illegal.

Analysis:

This Fox News video talks about the legalization of marijuana in Colorado versus the federal law. The federal law still opposes legalization of marijuana. When talking about the Colorado initiative, Arthur Aidala, a former defense attorney, states that the governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper, was very against the bill. This sources indicates that indeed Hickenlooper opposed the bill, but had no veto power.
Aidala talks about marijuana being a gateway drug and this source proves that. Marijuana can be used as a gateway to other drug use.
Jonna Spilbor talks about how the federal government can withhold funds from the states if they legalize it, however if states implement tax revenue for marijuana they can make more money than what the federal government give them.
They also talk about how if you get caught with any other illegal narcotic and have marijuana on you then the federal government cuts off all funds from you such as student loans and pell grants, which is correct.

Video #3

Analysis:

This video discusses the legalization of marijuana and who it will effect. Naomi Schaefer Riley, a Wall Street Journal columnist, stated that the legalization of marijuana will in fact have a disparate impact on the lower class because marijuana makes you lazy, passive, and docile. This link proves that, research clearly demonstrates that marijuana has the potential to cause problems in daily life or make a persons existing problems worse. In fact, heavy marijuana users generally report lower life satisfaction, poor mental and physical health, relationship problems, and less academic and career success compared to their peers who came from similar backgrounds. For example, marijuana use is associated with a higher likelihood of dropping out from school. Several studies also associate workers' marijuana smoking with increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers' compensation claims, and job turnover.
She also states that those who will be smoking will be the young and the poor. This link showed that Marijuana use has increased since 2007. In 2011, there were 18.1 million current (past-month) users—about 7.0 percent of people aged 12 or older—up from 14.4 million (5.8 percent) in 2007. this link also showed that Drug use is highest among people in their late teens and twenties. In 2011, 23.8 percent of 18 to 20 year olds reported using an illicit drug in the past month.

As for the poor, this link from PolitiFact proves Riley's comment to be half true. There are studies showing a higher prevalence of drug use among some welfare recipients. But there is also research that suggests that drug use among welfare and non-welfare recipients is consistent. PolitiFact rated the claim half true.

Video #4
Analysis:

This video is from October of 2012 and discusses which states that are going to vote on the legalization of marijuana. This takes place before the legalization and claims that the Children’s Alliance endorsed the legalization. That claim is in fact true. The official statement from the Children’s Alliance on their vote for Initiative 502 can be found here. Fox News also claims that President Obama has never been in favor of marijuana legalization. We found that in an interview with Barbara Walters [00:32-1:05] the president clearly states that he is not in favor of legalization right now. However, in his memoir, “Dreams From My Father” President Obama discusses the period of his life in high school when he smoked marijuana with his friends. Therefore, the claim by Fox News that Obama has never been in favor of marijuana legalization is only half true. The video portrays some truth and some truthiness.
